There have been a few threads recently that have got me wondering, what aircraft did the US have in the inventory when war broke out in Europe in 1939 and how did they compare to those that were being used by the European airforces?

I know that by the time they entered the conflict they'd had time to develop some decent equipment but if they had to go to war in 1939 like many other countries did how would they have faired?

I really don't know much about American aircraft of this period and would be interested to see hpw it all compared.

The P-26 was being replaced by the P-35 and then the P-36 in the late 1930s, but had not been completely removed from USAAC service by the outbreak of war, some were still in service.

By mid 1940 P-40 production had started and these would replace the P-35 and P-36. Later the P-39 and P38 would join the P-40 in service..
