The Vought V-156-B1 Chesapeake is essentially an SB2 Vindicator and acquired by the British by taking over an unfulfilled French order with some modifications.. They were originally ordered in 1940 by the French and the British began receiving them early in 1941. My understanding is that the early Vindicators had Aluminum lacquer interiors, so the first question is would the Chesapeake also have the Aluminum interior, or would they have gone to an interior green by the time the order was being filled, if so what was that color. Next question is what are the more likely camouflage colors, dark earth, dark green over sky, or sea grey and olive drab over sky as has been suggested elsewhere?

I never did much research on the Chesapeake, so I can't help with the interior colors. However, the attached drawing should help with the camouflage colors and patterns.

Cheers,

Dana

Thank Dana, your input is much appreciated, maybe a better question would be when did Vought switch from aluminum interiors to an interior green with the Vindicator, and what is that green likely to be? I would imagine that aircraft were delivered in the color the manufacturer was using at the time the air frame was produced, as I don't believe that the French or British specified a specific interior finish from what I understand.

FWIW, there is a rather crisp photo of a British Chesapeake on pg 117 of the book "Lend Lease Aircraft in WWII" by A. Pearcy. The aircraft is painted in one solid colour either a light grey or lite blue. It carries the std British roundels and displays no s/n.

I believe this may be the one you are referring to.

Yes, the very top photo is the one that is posted in A. Pearcy's book.
