What a wonderful thing y'all are doing here!! I hope to take what clues I can gather here i.e. names, dates, places and make a more complete picture of what these flags saw. I'm horribly curious about the temple stamps as well. Without the story its just a piece of cloth. Thank you so much!🙏[-o<

P.S. I just bought two more yesterday I wanted to include here but they are very hard to read because of the folds. I wont subject you to that! o_O When those get properly framed and become more clear I'll come back with them.

I suspect reading these messages from the past take an emotional toll on Shinpachi, the same as they would if we were reading messages for or from the young men of our various countries leaving for war. That's why I can't spend much time on the threads showing the death cards and period pilot photos. I find myself looking at the birth and death dates of the German death cards showing young men in their early 20s.

Shinpachi Shinpachi you have done some increible work.
I don't know how it will be for others but I do hate translation job because it not only requests me to be a machine for it but takes a lot of my time and energy. Please give me a few days for them requested but this will be the end of my service if such an request should not be modest.
Yes, I am annoyed so much:(
I'm sure I don't speak alone when I say we value your work FAR more than a simple machine. What your doing is a wonderful thing. I'm willing to pay you if that would make it worth your while.

I am glad if you are satisfied, atessman.

Though many do not understand, translation job is not good for the mental health. It's simply waste use of time and energy for me. I was frustrated because a moderator easily recommended me for as many as three flags(!) without understanding these facts though I mentioned them several times in this forum before. Not your fault :)

I understand, enough said.
Perhaps someone else could step up and carry some of the burden?

Again I can't thank you enough.

Sincerely

Shinpachi, my friend, we recommend you because you are the only person here who can translate it. No one else speaks Japanese here. No one can make you do it, and I am sure everyone would understand if you say you do not have the time or energy.

I speak German, and if I were asked to translate something that I do not have the time or energy for, I would simply say so politely.

Since we know you don't like to do it, we won't recommend you anymore. Its no big deal, and its your right to say so. I certainly don't think any less of you.

Curiosity about flags and other memorabilia always allows the funds to buy them but never the funds to pay for translation services. There is no problem finding people who understand Japanese, when I was in Japan I was astounded at how many could, and from a very young age too.

Thanks Chris for your kind consideration.
Here are many German speakers but Japanese. I only think what if I reject the request.
I may do it but, at the same time, complain as a set.

Very few Japanese English speakers want to be a translater but interpreter.
Speaking is quick and often enjoyable.

In my experience, socially, in Japan many young people were much better at reading and writing than speaking, that was in 1986 and 1999. However when talking about things written and spoken from the war era translation in English needs understanding of the many ways English has changed from 1939-45 to present day. I presume Japanese is the same because some conversations I had with Japanese people alluded to it. Names will not change and other things factual, but anything that conveys a sense or emotion must be judged in the language and the thinking of the time, in English much of the huge variation we had in the language has been lost due to radio and TV meaning everyone hears and speaks in the same way.

I regret not taking the time to learn Japanese from my Mother.

Shinpachi-san, you have been an amazing resource to the forum, especially with Aircraft manufacturer's paperwork.

In regards to flag translations, I fully understand the emotional burden, seeing (or even hearing in the mind) the sentiments written as a young man was about to go off to war.

Does anyone know if it's possible to set up Amazon wish lists for forum users with valuable and rare skills, such as Shinpachi? There have been many occasions where I wished that I could send a non-taxable gift for their hard work but there is no way to do this through the forum. The forum has its own rules on affiliate linking because it makes money through Amazon. So I think this is likely discouraged.
