Grabbed this shot of a Riverside Police Helicopter assisting on a vehicle stop, used a Canon 100-400mm push-pull lens with a Canon 1.4X III extender, this made my 400mm a 560mm. Just got the extended and love it can't wait to use it at the next air show.

Nice ones Merv. I'd thought of getting a converter/extender for one of my Nikons - a lot cheaper than getting a longer lens. I'd be interested to know how they perform overall - any image degradation, reduction in or affects on exposure, focus speed etc etc.

I didn't notice any problems at all with focus speed or sharpness. The two pictures of the RPD chopper came out pretty sharp and that's at the high end of 560mm. The auto focus worked great on the Canon 5D Mark III, but the auto focus won't work on my 70D, you have to manual focus. There are ways to work around this problem but I wouldn't try them. You do lose one stop of light with the Canon 1.4X III, and two stops with the Canon 2X III. I really don't know anything about the Nikon, Eric cold probably help you there.

I was on a nature hike with my daughter when this beauty flew over. Sorry it's not a very good shot, it was pretty hazy and a long distance away, trying to be stealth I think.

Nice shots all around Merv. With the last two, sometimes you have to take them as presented. They are interesting to me as I have never seen this type of aircraft before. Years ago I had a book of photo-journalist award winners. A lot of shots weren't even in focus but they did convey the message the photographer was trying to bring out once you studied the photo for a while.

It looks like a Orion, but they usually don't have the radar dome on top. Probably a Coast Guard variant maybe?
