Shown here is a Pathfinder Force lancaster B.Mk.I/III of No.35 Sqd, based at Gravely takes off between bands of flame during a FIDO test early in 1943. FIDO burner installations equipped 15 of the RAF's wartime airfields in England, using a staggering total of 136,382,700 litres (30 million Imp gals) of petrol to heat and disperse fog from airfield runways to let aircraft take-off and land in safety.
