Operation Torch (initially called Operation Gymnast) was the British-American invasion of French North Africa in World War II during the North African Campaign, started 8 November 1942.
This operation started a second front causing the Afrika Korps of General Erwin Rommel to split it's defences leading to total victory for the Allied forces in North Africa and paving the way for the invasion of Italy via Sicily.
During Operation Torch, all Allied aircraft flew in American markings.
