U-109

The Type IXB boat U-109 left Lorient on 28 April 1943 for another patrol in the North Atlantic, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Joachim Schramm, but was located on 4 May 1943 north-east of the Azores by Liberator G.R.Mk.V (FL955) of No.86 Sqd, flown by Pilot Officer J.C.Green, from Aldergrove, Northern Ireland on an escort to convoy HX236. Four depth charges straddled the U-boat a few seconds after this photograph was taken and the effect was lethal. Wreckage came to the surface and all fifty-two hands in the crew lost their lives.
