Shown here is the Type IXC/40 boat U-1229 under attack on 20 August 1944 by an aircraft from the escort carrier USS Bogue. U-1229 had left Trondheim on 26 July 1944, under the command of Korvettankapitan Armin Zinke, bound for Long Island in order to land agents and sabotuers. Six Avengers and two Wildcats of VC-42 attacked with rockets and depth charges when it was south-west of Newfoundland. The U-boat crash-dived and raised its schnorkel but was unable to procede underwater and was forced to surface. Eighteen of the crew were killed, including Zinke, bur forty-one were rescued before it sank. Ref: AIR 15/472
