The Type VIIC boat U-205 left Salamis, Greece on 2 February 1943 under the command of Kapitanleutnant Friedrich Burgel but on 17 February was picked up on the Asdic of the destroyer HMS Paladin, one of four warships escorting Convoy TXI about 80 miles north-east of Benghazi, Libya. The Paladin and a Blenheim Mk.V of No.15 (SAAF) Sqd, flown by Captain C.R.Brinton, from Amriya, Egypt, depth-charged U-205. This was brought to the surface and came under fire from the Paladin, the destroyer HMS Jervis, and the Blenheim. The U-boat surrendered, eight of the crew being killed and forty-two rescued.
