The Type VIIC boat U-563 left Brest for its eigth war cruise on 29 May 1943, bound for the North Atlantic under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Gustav Borchardt. Still south-west of Brest two days later, it was attacked twice with depth charges by Halifax (HR774) of No.58 Sqd, flown by Wing Commander Wilfred E. Oulton, from St.Eval, Cornwall. This photograph was taken on the second attack. The U-boat was damaged but did not sink. Ref: CN 1/39
