U-563 2

The damaged Type VIIC boat U-563 was evidently unable to submerge. It was then depth charged, on the same day by Sunderland G.R.Mk.III (DV969) of No.10 (RAAF) Sqd, flown by Flight Lieutenant Maxwell S. Mainprize, from Mount Batten, Devon. It began to sink but shortly afterwards was depth charged twice by Sunderland G.R.Mk.III (DD838) of No.228 Sqd, flown by Flying officer William M. French, from Pembroke Dock, taking this photograph on the second attack. The U-boat sank and about thirty men were seen in the water, but none of the crew of forty-nine survived. Ref: CN 1/39
