The Type IXD-2 boat U-848 (shown here under attack) left Kiel on 18 September 1943 bound for the Indian Ocean under the command of Korvettenkapitan Wilhelm Rollman, and sank a merchant vessel fourteen days later. On 5 November 1943, about 250 miles west-south-west of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, it was depth charged by four US Navy PB4Y-1 Liberators of VP-107, and two more from Composite Squadron One, USAAF. The U-boat sank with the loss of sixty-two of the crew after a lengthy battle. One crew member was picked up the following day, but later died. Ref: AIR 15/471
