When destroyers of DesRon 45 shelled the Shortland Islands, they came under fire from a Japanese shore battery of 3" guns. Bennett (DD-473) shown here being targeted at ranges from 1,900 to 6,000 yards, and Halford (DD-480) also c ame under heavy fire.
