In the mid-20s British Aviation Ministry issued specification F.29 / 27 fighter bombers with heavy 37-mm cannon COW (Coventry Ordnance Works). According to this specification firm Vickers has developed a project called Vickers Type 161 COW Gun Fighter. This project combined as outdated solutions (Scheme biplane with a pusher propeller), and many novelties.
The first flight of a prototype aircraft (J.9566) was held January 21, 1931, and September of the same year the aircraft was transferred to the testing center. Tests revealed a lack of horizontal stability of the aircraft in flight. To overcome these shortcomings, it has been developed variant of Vickers Type 162, but this time the military lost faith in the prospects of the gun COW and the project was closed.
