Map reference system - South West Pacific Area

Good suggestion! I'm in touch with Jim Teegarden of 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron (2ERS) and he might know this reference grid system.

Map reference system - South West Pacific Area

In a P-38 crash (or ditching) I am researching, I came across the use of a map reference that is unknown to me. I know this particular P-38 came down near Jefman aerodrome (Japanese drome near Sorong, West Papua, Dutch New Guinea) on September 5th 1944. The pilot, Lt Charles W. Springer, was...

Contacting Reddirtresearch on WWII SWPA history

Can anyone help me get in touch with whoever is the owner/author of Red Dirt Research – Rummaging through history to shed new light He or she is posting extremely interesting stuff, but there is no way on the website to contact him or her. If you are able to help me, you can email me here. Bas...

Sansapor - Mar airfield New Guinea WW2

Absolutely super! I always forget to search Fold3  That is of course a great source of material. I'll certainly have someone pull these pictures from NARA after Covid and have them digitised/scanned or printed in high res. Thanks JEC!

Sansapor - Mar airfield New Guinea WW2

From the Sansapor Mar airfield to the island of Middleburg is some 6 kilometres. You can see it clearly from the shore. Nearby there are five Alligator amphibians still in the jungle. The Alligators were used in the landing as you can see in the July 1944 picture.

Sansapor - Mar airfield New Guinea WW2

Sansapor was a little known place on the northern shore of the Birds Head peninsula of Dutch New Guinea. In July 1944 the Allies landed there to create an airbase as a stepping stone to reach the Philippines (next stop: Morotai). Both on shore of New Guinea as well as on the little island of...

    B-25H as night intruder - 418NFS

Yeah, I visited the website and read the PDF. Great stuff, but a bit mixed on pictures, specially on the B-25H. Thanks for the tip.

    B-25H as night intruder - 418NFS

Thanks MLflyer. I've seen these before but like in the pages you posted here, the quality of the pictures is not very good. AFAIK this configuration of the B-25 was fairly unique (no top turret). In this cropped part of an aerial of a crash landed B-25 of the 418th you can see the distinctive...

    B-25H as night intruder - 418NFS

As I am researching the 418th Night Fighter Squadron (flying at first the P70 night fighter variant of the A-20 and later the P61 Black Widow), the squadron flew for some time the B-25H as a night intruder and anti shipping bomber in New Guinea. There are hardly any pictures of this B-25H to be...

    New here

Hi, my name is Bas Kreuger and I am a Dutch aviation historian. Having worked in the Dutch Air Force museum in the 1990's, I've developed an interest in the air war in the Pacific, of course also including the Dutch East Indies AF and Naval Air Service flying Brewster Buffalo fighters, Glenn...

    B-25H of the 418th NFS

I'm doing research on the crash landing of a B-25H of the 418th NFS in July 1944 on the Vogelkop peninsula. The four man crew were rescued after a three week daring rescue mission, far behind enemy lines. As I couldn't find any good pictures of the B-25H with the 418th, I had through a friend...
