    Luftwaffe in 1936-41 improvements?

I understand swampy, I'm just giving my opinion as to what might - might - have led to a possibly 'better' outcome for Germany (& possibly a cold-war with at least some of the territorial gains held), it's just hard to see any of it under the crazy system they had, so, in my mind, that has to go...

    Luftwaffe in 1936-41 improvements?

Oh come on strider 190, we're not going to rerun that tired old Me/BF stuff are we? Will my apologies & the term Me (Bf) 109 do? :¬) ...& besides I'm sure I have read that 109E7's (with drop tank provision) were operational at the very tail end of the BoB, no?

    Luftwaffe in 1936-41 improvements?

Well yes Swampy, I do know, but then we are in the land of the 'what if...?' are we not? ;¬)

    Luftwaffe in 1936-41 improvements?

My ideas if I ruled the 3rd R? Ditch the racist nonsense that deprived Germany of some of its best scientists (& gave them to the allies). As said much earlier take the war seriously & move to a 'total war' footing from the start (& attempt to delay the start of the war for at least 1yr....the...

    Dogfighting in a P 38

Sorry to put the pedant's hat on here Greg.... The H1 500cc bike was the Mach III, the H2 750 was the Mach IV (and the 350 was the Mach II & the S1 250 was the Mach I, apparently, although outside of the net I'd never seen that used for the smaller bikes before even if it does kind of make...

    Dogfighting in a P 38

Sorry to digress.... pbehn a fellow X7 rider, well I never. I loved those little beasties, I had 4 of them :) (one was a Bee-line tuned one that wrecked it's engine inside 1000mls but boy was it fast (well, I know it's all relative, this was the mid - late 80s) & a lot of fun)

    improving the 109??

I can't give a reference but I am certain I remember reading about this, the comment was that the Swiss were more than a tad pee'd off that they had been supplied with obviously & very 'tired' practically worn-out ex-Luftwaffe and not brand new machines. I doubt this reflected the usual...

    improving the 109??

Interesting discussion, the 109V21 is an interesting bird too. I have a question, well 4 actually. The 109 is reputed to be increasingly difficult to fly approaching 400mph, surely this would need to be addressed too and was it seriously attempted with the later G/K models? Also earlier were...

    A curious German weapon

A forward swept wing was indeed unusual at that time, although not actually unique. But even though it is known that Junkers knew they had to locate engines (ie weight) along the wing to counter the twisting effect FSW's encounter (hence the triple engine configuration the real production types...

    best medium bomber

Some great aircraft mentioned, personally I like the B26, A/B26, the Mossie. One plane that seems over-looked is the Ju188 (which became the Ju388), it seems to have impressive performance.

    Winter operations of the Luftwaffe

Interesting stuff, I've wondered about engine oils & the behaviour of fuels at very low temps (I have read the stories about setting fires under engines etc) but it does make me wonder about the behaviour of these oils/fuels/coolants at altitude where temps are similarly very low. Presumably...

    MOST OVERRATED AIRCRAFT OF WWII

Would that not be a by-product of the turbo-supercharging? Rather than vent exhaust gasses directly to the atmosphere through some kind of short manifold (as with non-turbo engined aircraft) they are piped to spin the turbo-charger & then exhausted out, I'd expect a notable silencing effect...

    Which aircraft would you cancel?

Just have to say F104 Starfighters are one of the coolest meanest looking planes, especially the German & Italian G/S models with everything loaded up & hanging off, fantastic plane ('the missile with a man in it', wasn't it....and protective 'guards' on the leading edge of the wing cos it was...

What if the Me 262 had 20mm cannons?

I've read the Me262 could turn reasonably well (I'm not saying it was described as the ultimate aerobatic machine or anything) but I have to wonder, why, if everything is working properly, would a 262 pilot ever want to engage in a turning fight? I thought the whole idea was the jump in speed it...

    Churchill's secret

You misunderstand me Greg, I am not saying 2nd hand smoke is not a real issue, I just don't think the airlines gave a damn about it, I do think the smoking ban has led to aircraft which appear to be clean but which are in fact cleaned less and despite superficial appearances are dirtier. In...
