What octane was Italian aircraft fuel during WW2 and from where were they getting it? Did they have different grades for bombers and fighters? I read somewhere that the CR.32 was using a blend of 55% petrol, 23% alcohol and 22% Benzol.

I read that the reason the BMW P.8028 was not produced and used in the Fw190 was because it "failed to demonstrate a worthwhile increase in performance".
Supposedly the BMW P.8028 engine with a two-stage supercharger offered no significant increase in performance over the Fw190A with the standard two-speed BMW 801, and that is why use of this engine was not pursued. I can see that being true, for lower altitudes particularly. But, what kind of...
I think Packard made 14,000 marine versions of this "vanished engine". They had transmissions with reverse gears and water cooled exhaust manifolds attached which made them much heavier than any airplane engine. https://www.pt-boat.com/packard/packard.html
What about the Packard 5A-2500? Packard was experimenting with an OHC V12 of 161.9mm bore and 165.1mm stroke with a swept volumne of 2540ci (maybe 2489?) and a weight of 650kg in 1938 and early 1939. Rated power was 1500hp at 2500rpm. Max power was 1750 hp at 2800 rpm. Packard had been...
My sources say 11.35x62 Madsen had a 305 grain bullet fired at 2475 fps. 900 to 1000 rpm. Though I've also seen a muzzle velocity of 850 mps quoted. Just from looking at pictures of the bullet, it is short and fat. I worry that the 11.35x62 Madsen's bullet has a poor sectional density and...
I may be wrong, but I always thought it had to do with the different naming conventions of the IJA and the IJN. Please correct me if I am wrong, but early in WW2, did not the IJ Navy engines have names by which the engine was commonly known. Didn't the Army use their own Ha number and/or a...
I have read several times now over the years that the Alfa Romeo 135 engine was tested and compared with the BMW 801 and surpassed the 801 in reliability. From where does this information come? Was it done as part of the fighter comparisons commission at Guidonia in February 1943? Does anyone...
