Thank you @fubar57 - very interesting to read. Unfortunately the USS Suwannee war diary does not list any tactical numbers, just the number and types of a/c launched.
But ... and this is where a HUGE thank you is in order; you did provide me with a valid link to the archives and doing some...
@Barrett, thanks, but I am aware of the fact that carrier aviators rarely had the luxury of flying specific or designated a/c.
I am looking for information of any a/c Harris flew during Operation Torch - at the end of the day, since all VGF-27 a/c were standard, all I would need is confirmed...
Hi all,
For modelling purposes: I am looking for information and/or photos of a F4F Wildcat, that would've been flown by future ace Cecil Harris, during operation Torch. I haven't been able to find too many photos of VGF-27 Wildcats, while onboard USS Suwannee.
I would assume that these...
Yes, this is the one that I've found online and is referred to as Gollob's mount, but I dunno where this information comes from.
The photos of Hans von Hahn's Bf also look very similar to this profile, apart from the rudder, victory markings and apparently also missing the JG3 emblem...

Hi and thanks for your response. This is exactly my problem with the 'Black 6' profile that we've seen floating around. Being the Staffelkapitän of 4th Staffel, I'd assume the number on his mount should've been 'White 1', not 'Black 6'. At the same time, and do correct me if I am wrong, the...
Hi all,
I am planning to build one of Gollob's mounts (1/72 scale), but instead of going with the more usual suspects, or Bf 109 F-4's, I was thinking about going with F-2's instead. But it seems that the information about his pre-F-4 mounts is quite scarce. Online, I was able to find just one...
I'd also go with finnish top ace Eino Ilmari Juutilainen - final tally 94,17 kills. App. 1/3 of his kills were achieved while flying Brewster fighter. 2/3 of his kills were achieved with Bf109 - couple also with Fokker D.XXI.
More remarkable, no enemy pilot was ever able to score hits into...
Hi!
Does anyone know what is the middle name of Commander David McCampbell? I've been trying to find his whole name, but so far, without luck. Or does that letter S really mean anything there, or is it just for show? :|
Thanks,

Well, gee, I don't know...how about common knowledge?
In 1926/27 Willy Messerschmitt joined Bayerische Flugzeugwerke as chief designer/engineer. That's no secret. NOTE, he joined, he did not buy the company, so he was just an employee...thus the name of the company still was Bayerische...
Now you just argue that it has nothing to do with the date. Or it has nothing to do with the fact that the factory changed it's name. On what grounds? :?
Hmm, where it was said that it was RLM that changed the system?
The naming system in germany was standardized all along and called for...
Really?...Have you ever thought why the change came between Bf 162 and the Me 163?
Check out the design dates: Bf 162 was originally designed prior to summer 1938, some prototypes were manufactured in 1937 or early 1938 (cannot remember more accurately). On the other hand Me 163 was...
Hi!
I'm looking for pictures (drawings and/or photographs) of a P-38, flown by Richard Bong, but not the usual ones. What I'd like to see is a P-38 with OD/Neutral Gray scheme.
I found one picture in the internet, is this really Bong's aircraft on the foreground? PICTURE
Any advice or...
IIRC the Bf designation was usually used on aircraft that was originally designed prior to 1938. After 1938 this was changed to Me. So, originally 109 was designed earlier and thus received the Bf 109 designation.
Though, this really does not matter what the aircraft is called in what paper...
