Dear DerAdlerIstGelandet
You are right, the Mustang was a long range fighter, the Spiti was a short range interceptor. But, there was a tendency, to increase the Spiti's range
and the later types had more and more range, but at 1944 was unnecessary to create a long range Spiti escort type...
There isn't any fighter, that you cant swap for another fighter. The P-51 you can swap for the P-47 or P-38. Maybe the causality of Ally would be higher if only the P-47 or P-38 will be the only escort fighter, but they will win the war. The only different between the Mustang and the Spiti and...
Good question!
I think the Spiti was developed in very dramatic way without Mitchell. The Spiti I wing span was 36 ft 10 in, lenght was 29 ft 11 in, max weight 5819 pounds, max speed 362 mph. The Spiti 21 span was 40 ft 4 in, lenght was 32,8 ft 8 in, max weight 9124 pounds, max speed 457 mph...
In the beginning of the war the C-47s weren't so important then in the ending phase. Anyway, I think nobody can win the war only with transport aircraft.
Its true, but without defending, these C-47 are worth nothing! In the siege of Burma in 1944 Spiti VIII defended the transport a/c-s and the Japanese fighters could shot down only 3 C-47.
To FLYBOYJ
No but it could carry a barrel of beer without any conversation! And of course it could fly with only one engine!!!!!
Thanks DerAdlerIstGelandet
Spiti, of course. It was used from 1939 to 1945, in almost all of roles (interceptor,fighter-bomber, carrier fighter, reconnaissance, trainer, escort fighter, seaplane fighter, long-range escort fighter), in all of the theater of II WW. The Spiti shot down last german, the Seafire shot down the...
