I think you are absolutely correct, why keep propping up an airframe which was new in the mid 30s and use scarce Merlins while you could put them in a great early 40s airframe. the whole "what if" thing is pointless. In my not so humble opinion (IMNSHO).
From a friend whose father was building Thunder Mustang, I was told that it was powered by a V12 built upon Chevrolet big block V8 engines. They must have created a V12 blocked based on the Chev 454 ci engine.
I agree, why try to adapt an airframe which is essentially a tricked up 1930s P36 to compete with a later, better design. The P40 did OK until it was replaced by the P51, P47, and P38.
The Mustang was simply a later, better design.
Hey, people, we are dealing with hindsight. And not allowing for then current needs and conditions. I am looking for expert hopefully non biased opinions about how a faceoff between the FW190 and the Corsair might happen. The confrontation never happened but what if?!
Gimme opinions, please...
I am new and not sure how ww2aircraft works. I am learning by doing. Any helpful suggestions are welcome.
Interested in expert opinion an dog fight potential of F4U vs. FW190.
