The novel was Heroes in Hell, a collection of short stories in volume form, and one of the stories involved a retired Army Pilot involved in a crash, and lands in Hell, still singing that song they loved to sing(this is kind of important), "there ain't no fighter pilots in Hell.....", and lands young, and in front of what the Great Punisher decreed, a P47N to fight the Soviet Union's greatest Hero, who had an(I think, it's been 35 years since I read it)La5FN, the best.
