There is a special pair of pliers that gets used to install and remove them. The Clecos have three wire parts. and the middle one withdraws for installation and extends to enlarge the other two to the exact doameter of a rivet when set.
Looks complicated but is quite simple in practice. Each has something like 70 pounds of clamping force and keeps metal sheets joined together during both fabrication and subsequent riveting.
