Hello everyone, do you have any information on this aircraft part, which has no markings or apparent manufacturer's code? The exterior color appears to be dark olive green, and the interior reminds me of RLM02 in places. It looks like an escape hatch to me. The holes could be from combat impacts, but nothing is certain. The dimensions are 94cm x 64cm. Thank you for your help.

That looks to be a hatch cover or door, big enough for a person to easily fit through and constructed for an aircraft with a double skinning and a curvature form. The apparently outside face is flush riveted and has a single recessed hand hold. The damage is speculative for cause, although I would say not from bullets or shrapnel. The form is apparently without any hinges or latches, but there are two groups of 3 rivets missing on the outside edge of one side that might have attached something. There are also 2 missing rivets, one each side of the handhold and also a small rectangular cut-out in the outside edge near the handhold, about 1.5x0.5cm. Just visible on the lower edge in the pic are what look like 2 engagement lugs.
It is possible that the handhold recess incorporates a sprung latch mechanism, but the photo's do not reveal any detail.

Hello Engineman, you've perfectly summarized the role of this part. In both photos, the two holes are on the handle side, and the two lugs are on the opposite side.

Thanks Laurent,
The extra shots do seem show that the 2 lugs are operated by the handhold and a sprung linkage. I think that the 2 holes at the opposite end are for the door to engage 2 fixed lugs on the aircraft frame for this door/hatch. Overall, I feel that the latches and the door are a little lightweight for a floor panel, possibly more likely a side or roof panel.
