One of my instructors tells of 'delivering' P-40s in '41 when restricted Lend Lease was in effect. They'd fly them from the factor in New York to an empty farm field on the North Dakota/Canadian border. No one around, and they'd just leave them lined up.
A bus would show up to take them to a train station and back home. The bus driver said the next day, there would be just tractor tracks in the field heading across the border, and no airplanes in sight.
