Hi all
I'm building the Tamiya kit of Bf109E-3 and I'd like to ask if anybody here could help me with more information about the aircraft flown by Obfw. Jakob Arnoldy. I had information that the "Weisse 5"was a Bf 109E-3 WNr.1276 from 4./JG 77 based in Mandal, 1940. The only photo I have is this one:
https://www.asisbiz.com/…/Messerschmitt-Bf-109E3-4.JG77-Whi…
However, in the Messerschmitt group on Facebook, I was told it would probably be an E-4 not E-3. I know the painting scheme should be 71/02 over 65
Any more information would be much appreciated

Both the Werk Nummer and the cockpit canopy indicate the E-3 version. If you look at the Bf 109E at the background you may notice the different cockpit hood more characteristic for the E-4 and late types. I haven't heard about Bf 109E-4 retrofitted with the early cockpit canopy while abot the E-3 with the late hood, I did.

Here two shots of the Emils of the same squadron at the same time. The "13" seems to be the E-3 while the "1" of the E-4 variant.

Thank mate
It helped a lot. I'm more confident that this is really an E-3.
Cheers

My pleasure.

Here is a shot of his another "White 5" being also the E-3 type. It seems to be the kite he was shot down. Believing the caption it's Bf 109E3, 4.JG77, WNr 5277 shot down by RAF 33 Sqn, John Mackie, on the15th April 1941.

And here is the next Bf 109E of the squadron. Judging by the caption in German it's the E-3 White 11, WNr. 1365 of the 4./JG77 in 1940. You may notice the late type cockpit canopy.

Another question.
What colour would the spinner be in this photo?
White?
Cheers

The enlarged part of the pic shows that the rear ring of the spinner was of either the black or RLM70 Schwarzgrun for sure. The rest of the spinner seems to be of the white. Unfortunately, the view with the angle isn't a good for a such assesment.

The main problem is that the spinner could have been painted white with a RLM71 quarter or even covering a half of the spinner. The colour of the part would be seen differently and would depend on the side of the spinner seen. For instance.. Here you are two shots of the Black 4 dated 1940. In the first one the spinner can be seen white while in the second it is dark that may indicate the Schwarzgrun paint. As a third pic I attched a shot of the Yellow 10 belonged to the 6./JG51 crashed in 1940. The painted spinner in the mentioned way can be noticed.

Therefore we can only base upon other shots that present the other planes of the unit at the same period of time. For example , there are two pictures with JG77 kites. The first one shows the Bf 109E-3 of the 4./JG77 while the second image is of Bf 109E-4 belonged to 5./JG77. Both images are dated on 1940. Please also notice that the plane of the 5./JG77 had the dark wing tips at the undersides. It indicates the yellow colour there.

To sum up.. because there is no evidence on the way the spinner was painted I would suggest to follow the pic of the Bf 109E-3 of the 4./JG77 seen above. Unless there are other pictures of the squadron planes present the spinners in a better way.
