I do not believe that either side condoned these incidents.
I also do not think that any senior officer on either side had the kind of contempt for each other that Admiral King showed
I also would in mitigation say that pilots would often have a limited amount of time to accurately identify the aircraft in view due to closing speeds, angles, similarities between types, testosterone, fatigue and stress.
I am glad I was never put in that position!
Better training, better radios and better intelligence - who was in the area etc may well have helped.
