Recently i stumbled onto an interesting KMT P-51 loss

on 18 may 1945 a P-51K-1 of the 3rd fighter group 28th squadron flown by squadron leader Zhang Dafei was shot down in a dogfight over Hengyang, Henan province by reported japanese "zeroes" and was killed

are there any japanese air unit claims of a dogfight against chinese p-51s or US p-51s on that date?

or what japanese air unit operated in those areas

During this period, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Services 5th Air Army was operating in southern and eastern China

with 9th sentai wich used ki-44 and ki-84 but its only possible i think.

ah it was during Battle of Western Henan and Northern Hubei

"The situation was excellent; Japanese Zero fighters hadn't appeared in the skies over South China for a long time. However, just when everything seemed to be going smoothly, on May 18th, 1945, the 28th Squadron dispatched four P-51 fighters, led by Squadron Leader Zhang Dafei, from Ankang, Shaanxi, to attack Japanese ground forces in Xinyang, Henan. They encountered Japanese fighters and engaged in aerial combat. Squadron Leader Zhang Dafei was killed in the battle. When the planes returned, only three aircraft were seen, including two Americans and one Chinese pilot.'
