Color scheme for French Dewoitine D.520 GC.1/3 in May/June 1940

Hello everyone,

I am finishing a French Dewoitine D.520 in 1940, Tamiya 1/48.
I am also waiting for GC1/3 Berna decals in May / June 1940 that I just bought.
Is the Berna decals paint plan OK?
I think I will do the plane of the Adjudant André Carrier.

I use Modelmaster Enamel colors.
I miss the reference French khaki MM 2106. Could you tell me what reference approaching I could find in the model range master Enamel?

I have already painted with airbrush the bottom in "French light blue gray" MM 2109 and the top in "French dark blue gray" MM 2105.
I still have to paint the "Earth Brown" MM 2108.

For French green khaki, which is a green color tending towards brown, I also find a similar color in HUMBROL "Forest green" H 150.
Does this seem OK to you?

I intend to use paper masks to have slightly fuzzy edges.
Is it better to paint brown first then khaki?

Could you also provide me a painting plan in 3 views, with the left and right side?
I know it's a not-so-obvious topic ...

I hope my writing of this post is readable ... I do not practice English very well.

The Khaki colour should be FS 34088 - Humbrol 155 Olive Drab. The closest one for the MM range is FS 34087 - Model Master Olive Drab FS 34087 no.1711. IMHO you may use that MM enamel that should be fine.

But if you ask for the French Green - Vert Fonce... it should be FS 34079 - Humbrol 116. The Model Master - Dark Green FS 34079 no.1710.

Is it better to paint brown first then khaki?

In the case it doesn't matter becuase you have alredy applied the Gris Blue Fonce. Generally apply the one that is lighter firstly.

Could you also provide me a painting plan in 3 views, with the left and right side?

The Khaki colour should be FS 34088 - Humbrol 155 Olive Drab. The closest one for the MM range is FS 34087 - Model Master Olive Drab FS 34087 no.1711. IMHO you may use that MM enamel that should be fine.

But if you ask for the French Green - Vert Fonce... it should be FS 34079 - Humbrol 116. The Model Master - Dark Green FS 34079 no.1710.

I think it's the khaki color that was used and not the French green.
I do not have the olive drab MM1711.
It is extremely difficult to find the Model Master Enamel colors in Belgium!
But I have the Humbrol 155 in stock. I will try with this color in test.
... it seems to me to be more brown.
I also have the color "Dark Green (B-52)" FS 34096 - MM 2027 ...

For which one?

Unfortunately I couldn't find any decent painting plan in 3 views. Generally not too much can be found on the plane. However the diagram seen below may come in handy. Also check the link below. It should be useful too.

Hello,

I had a very big problem with the decals Berna Decals: very thick, very bad print frame, very visible.
They do not react to the traditional Microsoft / Microset.

I think I'm going to paint the roundels. Could you advise me for French colors?

For blue, I found Humbrol H89 or a test I did: Testor Model Master MM 2715- Blue + White.
For the red, I hesitate: Humbrol H60, Scarlet red.

Could you advise me, in acrylic or enamel colors?

Rouge drapeau ( cocardes ) - FS 31302 or 31105 or 31136 : Humbrol 174, Humbrol 60, Gunze H29, Tamiya X07, Life Color LC06.

Bleu drapeau ( cocardes ) - FS 35190 or 35200 : Humbrol 89, Humbrol 48, Gunze H35, Tamiya X14, Vallejo Model Color 70.901, Mr.Paint MRP-239 Blue FS 35190. or like you suggested the Hu 89 + some of white.

Blanc ( cocardes ) - FS 37875 or FS 37886: Humbrol 34, Gunze H11, Model Master 1768, Vallejo Model Color 70.820.

regarding these colours for the French roundels.. I found them of two tones I mean the lighter and darker. The lighter red colour can be seen in the post #11 for instance while the darker one in post #7.. Generally it a matter of scanning I would say. But the small difference can be noticed in many B&W pictures. Looking at them I have gotten the impression that the red colour was of the darker tone mostly. The colour images below isn't of the best quality but the darker tone of the red can be seen. So the Humbrol 174 and 60 seem to be a good choice. Contrary to that the blue colour looks like being quite light and pale.
