Very interesting photo, first pic on post #1,373.
It doesn't look like other pics of "V3". The large boxy radiators appear to be very forward, looking to be just behind the props. Other details are, oil cooler on top of cowling, air intake for supercharger on left side of cowling for DB600. Also, 4x MG17 fitted and "V" marking painted on bottom of outer wing panel on both sides.

Because it is not the V-3 Werk Nr. 870 D-ATII but Bf 110C-04 (C-1) VB+TV built by the Focke Wulf factory. The oil radiator was move at the top of the engine cowling while the main cooling radiators were repositoned from underwings to the bottom of the engines. The pic is often confused with the Bf 110A-01 ...see below

I suspect that the engines are DB 601 A in the C-04.

It looks like. The Bf110 was the Werk Nr. 3243. The trials with the kind of the engine cowling and the cooling system carried out from March 1941 to the October 1942. So the delivering of the DB 601A engines wasn't a problem.
 
Yes, I guess the Fw modification of the cowlings and coolers was either a Fw investigation or an RLM trial?
Certainly, Fw were trying hard to minimise the drag and weight/complexity of liquid cooling systems. Also, they saw how the Junkers 88 A, Jumo 211 power units were quite good with the coolers grouped at the front in a circular cowling with gills. I think the bonus from these early attempts was first really seen in early 1943 with the DB 603 trials of the Fw 190 B and C fitted with circular front coolers. Fw then went into production with the further developed circular cooler of the Jumo 213 in the Fw 190 D-9 although I am not certain if that was entirely a Junkers design. The Jumo 213 power-egg came in several different types. Also, contemporary was the Me 209 with a circular front cooler. Later, Fw fitted the front annular coolers on some Ta 152 designs that had low drag. These late front annular coolers were noticed and copied by the British, notably prototyped on some post-war Napier Sabre powered aircraft.
Overall, I guess that the later front coolers were efficient. However, complexity was not totally avoided, engine removal involved also taking off the cooling system.

There is no more of the info on the trials. Also I guess that was the Fw modification and the factory tests. Because all the C and later Bf 110 variants got the standard cowlings. The main radiators were repositioned back to the windows. It looks it wasn't accepted or just wasn't effective and was given up finally.
