Despite the striking similarity, the engine was far less successful than either of the Battlestar Galacatica series. It did fly and I think there is still one around (not flying). Like the original Battlestar Galactica series, this engine was also "re-imagined". I don't mean to torture people for too long so the answer to this engine will be coming in the next day or two.

And that brings me to robwakmm's post; I have no idea. In fact it is making my head hurt. Obviously a mock-up but of what. A 90-degree X that has 6 exhaust stacks on each very thin block. I hope someone comes up with it or robwakmm tells us in a few days.

Regards,

WJP

As a hint the company is still in making piston aircraft engines

...and a hint would definitely help with this one, I've got nothing

Hints for the Battlestar Gallactica engine:

1) From USA
2) The company still produces aircraft engines (Right on Shortround6! Seems like you know.)
3) It is 1/2 the engine it became
4) The manufacturer's name is visible to a degree in the photo

Unless told otherwise, I will post what it is in about 12 hours.

On the Crosley X-24, I don't think I would have gotten that one even with many hints and a map.

WJPearce it's a Lycoming O-1230

Correct!

Developed in the mid to late 30s as part of the USAAC Hyper Engine program the O-1230 was meant for buried installation in the wings of bombers. The engine was flown in a Vultee XA-19A as a test mule. By the time the engine was ready it was too small in displacement and power and the idea of buried engines was no longer popular. Lycoming then "doubled" the engine making the H-2470. This engine was installed in the Vultee XP-54 Swoose Goose (pusher fighter). The engine and plane never lived up to expectations.
