F-4B MiG killer for Dan McIntyre and Alan Johnson

Hi all - first off, I hope this is okay to post because it isn't WWII related, but I see questions about other modern aircraft so I think it's allowed.

Anyways, I was curious as to why F-4B NL-107 BuNo 150634 is credited with a MiG-17 kill while being flown by Dan McIntyre and Alan Johnson of VF-151 in 1965. Photos point to this aircraft (150634) being with VF-161 and later VF-92. In addition, VF-151's NL-107 for the 1965 war cruise aboard Coral Sea was BuNo 149457. Which was the real MiG killer for McIntyre and Johnson? Thanks.

The Osprey book "US Navy F-4 Phantom II MiG Killers 1965-70" shows a photo of F-4B NL-107 BuNo 150634 saying it was the aircraft that shot down the MiG on 6 October 1965. I've got one more book to check

The book ".....and Kill MiGs" only has a listing for the kill, the aircraft as flying with VF-151. The above post also says that VF-151 was aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea operating as part of CVW-15. This might help you find the real F-4 involved

Odd that the always reliable Wiki doesn't even mention the event even though they use the first book as a reverence. Possibly the book is wrong????

Possibly, but where did the BuNo originate from? Someone's logbook? I haven't seen any photo showing a kill as to why 150634 was credited. Maybe it was a replacement that was either loaded or offloaded at one point during the cruise?

This is from the '65 Coral Sea cruise book showing NL-107. No confirmation on the BuNo, although most sources point to 150634 having a black radome in '65.

Roger that. What's the date on that photo? I'm thinking 150634 may have been loaned to 151 just for the '65 cruise. The photos I've seen of 150634 with VF-161 show it with the old warning symbols that extend onto the splitter plate, which I think was discontinued around '67.
