First time I've seen this.

P.S. for the modelers:
The latest edition of the Airfix F6F in 1:24 has bombs and (late) racks. It's not "my scale" so I didn't check it earlier, but after Geo's question I became curious.

500lbs and 1000lbs as seen above.

Interesting Yves. I just went through some 1:48 instructions from Airfix, Hobbyboss, Eduard etc and they all have bombs and racks. Its possible that because I try not to put things under wings that I've never noticed them before

Geo, check your Kinzey book. I always knew about this racks, but never asked myself -3 or -5 or else. So here's the answer:

Yes, but is it a production F6F-3, a prototype or a later re-fit inner wing rack? They made a lot of -3s a re-fit is plausible. As a side note: "Stranger in A Strange Land" by CDR Alfred R Wood, 'USN Hellcats over France' notes -5s: "Our Hellcats were loaded w 250, 500 and 1,000 and 50 cal MG. We dropped everything we could on the Germans, and when we ran out of bombs, we rigged depth charges under our wings and pounded the Germans with that.
