Obviously, nobody wants academics to be creating nonsense, and it would be wrong to deliberately create lies that are undetectable.
If I recall, they idea was to evaluate whether the peer-reviewers were able to detect hoaxes that should be able to be detected by a person with proper critical thinking skills (though I could be wrong about the exact methodology used).
Just spend some time in Eugene, Oregon, the locale of the University of Oregon, and it will all make perfect sense to you........you may even want to write your own "iceberg gender" paper. (and buy lots of tie-dyed clothing)
