Hello everyone,

I'm helping an elderly friend who recently lost her husband. He was a mechanically creative tinkerer and collector who accumulated all sorts of unusual and historic items. Amongst his things, we found what appears to be a WW2 fighter aircraft drop tank, complete with a plaque mounted on it.

From what I can gather, it's an aluminum external fuel tank, likely from a P-51 Mustang or similar era aircraft, possibly used in bomber escort missions. The condition is excellent—stored indoors for years—and it looks nearly untouched.

We are trying to:
  1. Confirm its exact identification (type of aircraft / period).
  2. Get a sense of its value in today's collector market.
  3. Eventually find it a good home with someone who will appreciate its history.
This isn't a "fire sale"—it's more about making sure it goes to the right person. If anyone here has expertise, resources, or even potential interest, I'd greatly appreciate your input.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Welcome to the site. I doubt it is the WW2 era fuel tank. Being made by the NA doesn't measn it was used with the P-51 Mustang. IMHO it is the post-war jet era one. I'm almost sure it's a 200 Gallon F86 Sabre jet one from 50' like these ones seen below.

BTW .... we don't allow to trade on the forum. Please follow our rules.
