Greg suggests that Eaker didn't car when P-38s were taken away from the Eighth AF for the North African campaign.
I'm not sure of the truth on that side, but he also lost a chunk of his bombers (mostly B-24s), which he must have been mad about.
Not that he had any real choice in the matter anyway.
Also, he says that the P-38J was "available" in August 1943. Correct me if I am wrong, didn't the P-38J start production in August 1943?
And the range calculations based on best speed for range - ~220mph TAS for the P-38 for 800+ miles on internal fuel. Sounds like a great plan for the ETO.
