KB712 "V" "Smitty Love." April 15, 1944. A rare wartime colour photo of a Canadian built Lancaster X. This aircraft was flown by F/Lt. HHM Cave and crew on a "Sea Sweep" October 16, 1944: "This aircraft participated in a Sea Sweep of which no reports are available." KB712 crashed 12 days later at Hurth, Germany during an operation to Cologne on 28 October 1944. All crew were killed: Pilot, F/O A. N. Nelligan, who was on his 5th sortie; F/O J. R. Fichtner, Navigator; FS W.M. Herman, Wireless Operator; F/O J. A. Nafziger, Bomb Aimer; and Sgts. B. E. Greenhalgh, Rear Gunner; W.E. Hawkings (RAF), Flight Engineer, and E.R. Smith, Mid-Upper Gunner. KB712, was the second-oldest on the squadron at the time, having logged 52 sorties.
