The French Casablanca submarine (Q183 skipper commandant L'Herminier) was of the few that avoided being scuttled after the Germans tried to seize the French fleet at Toulon on november 27, 1942 and managed to escape to Algeria.
It was assigned to the British submarine group at Oran and assigned to special missions ; clandestine intelligence gathering, agents landing and recovery and resistance networks supply in Corsica.
The Commander of the sub group rewarded Casabianca with a Jolly Roger flag ornated with seven daggers (one for each clandestine mission) and red and white strips for the ships sunk by gun or torpedo.
After the war, and anti-submarine escort ship was launched and named Casabianca (1957-1984).
