Most American engines in foreign hands were exported in American aircraft. Packard V1650 Merlins were installed in Canadian made Hurricanes, Lancasters and Mosquitos. Some P&W R1830s would up in some Vickers Wellingtons and some Australian made Bristol Beauforts. Great Britain was designing and building good engines.

I would add that about 1/2 of UK built Lancasters were Packard powered and all Lincolns as well as over a 1000 Spitfires.

Are you sure about the Lincolns? These were mostly made post-war, after Packard stopped making Merlins. Half of all UK built Lancasters sounds like a lot too. Rolls Royce, and Ford of England manufactured over 80,000 Merlins. They must have been used in something.

I am looking up the non-supercharged Meteor engines on Wikipedia. It is not clear how many of these were manufactured, and some were converted from obsolete Merlin engines. Most of this must be production in addition to the numbers above.

As far as I know, all Canadian manufactured Hurricanes, Mosquitos and Lancasters used Packard engines. The RAF stuck a 2 in front of the Merlin engine version for Packard engines, hence the 224 you note above. Spitfire XVIs were powered by Merlin 266s. Merlin 28s and 38 were made in England.

In my notes I have that the Packard built Merlins with a 2 in front of the model number (eg 224, 266, etc) were built to the exact same specifications as the British built equivalent (eg the Merlin 24, 66, etc). The "same" in this case includes everything from bolt sizes and patterns, to the type of carburetter fitted, the supercharger drive used, etc. This was in order to keep the maintenance and spare parts doable with the same tools and supply chain.

The Merlin 28 was built only by Packard, and differed from the equivalent RR built Merlin XX in several details, including some of the bolt sizes and patterns, 2-piece cylinder block, the type of carburetter fitted, etc. As with the Packard built Merlin 28, the Merlin 31, 33, 38 were the equivalent of the Merlin 21, 23, 22 respectively, but varied in some details from the RR built engines.

As built, the early Lancaster Mk III had Merlin 28 engines, while the early Lancaster Mk I had Merlin XX engines. I do not know the details of the all of the differences between the two marks, but the carburetter on the Merlin 28 required detail mods of the controls.
