There was a dogfight in MTO in January, 1945 when several Mustangs were surprised by a pair of Bf 109s and one Mustang was hit in the wing and at least part of the .50 cal ammo exploded in the wing racks. The Bf 109 was not able to finish off the badly damaged Mustang because he was shot down by the wingman of the damaged Mustang. Later, a P-51 pilot from this formation baled out from this stricken plane still over enemy territory and I'm sure it was the combat damaged plane, but the details are missing (pilot passed away decades ago without a reminiscence, MACR contains no significant details, etc).
Anyone knows any P-51 which was able to limp back with significantly damaged wing from 100s of miles deep behind enemy territory?
