Now Australia
P51 Fighters.
I flew RAF-UK Shackletons with four Griffons with contra-rotating props to absorb the extra power.

[ Earlier UK aircraft like the Lancaster, Spitfire and USA - P-51's only had Merlins.]

Has anyone fitted a Griffon to a P-51 for air racing in the USA ?

There was also Red Baron, owned by Roy Maclain in Idaho Falls. Powerplant was a Griffon 57 driving a de Havilland contra-prop of 13ft 8in diameter, though I don't think the nacelle fairing looked as effective as the previous poster. The Griffon was taken from an Avro Shackleton developing 2,455hp for take-off and the carb intake was positioned on top of the cowling much like the earlier, Allison-engined Mustangs.

Sorry, I can't post a pic right now but you could probably google image it.

Look at that thing! What a monster!

You gotta be on your game when you start monkeying around with that much power. Considering it is a stripped down Mustang (not a combat loaded one), it must be a royal bitch to fly.
