Has anyone seen the posts by Mr. Ventimiglia on the Facebook group "I Cavalieri del Cielo la Regia Aeronautica" concerning the "bottle-necks" the Italians faced in their efforts to improve the performance of their aircraft engines during WW2? If anyone is aware of these postings, what do you think of them? In some of Mr. Ventimiglia's posts from late June and early July, he enumerates and delves into some of the Italian attempts to improve their engine performance through water-injection, increasing the octane of their fuels, and that the lack of appropriate lubricating oils and certain metals was a limiting factor in achieving favorable outcomes in this area. Is Mr. Ventimiglia a member of this forum by any chance? He seems to have researched some interesting primary documentation.

Immediate power increase: A radial engine designed to deliver 1,350-1,500 HP with standard gasoline at 87 octane, if powered at 100 octane and with higher compressor overload pressure, could deliver up to 15-20% more power.

Minor overheating: The high anti-[detonating] detoning power reduced the phenomenon of "head beating". This would theoretically solve one of the chronic problems of the Piaggio P.XII on the P.108 bomber: too high exercise temperatures in the rear cylinders."

Just reading this short translation does not reveal anything surprising to me. Engine technology was developing in all realms of aviation during WW2 and all engine developments
relied on fuel, oil and technology improvements. Axis countries in particular suffered with shortages of critical raw materials and this limited development in some ways.
Despite having world class engineering capabilities in most respects, I think that Italy in WW2 Aviation did not produce the aircraft and engines that it might have done. The obvious lack of clarity in design concepts perhaps hints at underlying reasons for some limited success. Italy was capable of producing the DB V12 engines under "Licence" but overall, I think they fell short of having top-rank technology, design, development and production capabilities, and the results we can see.

I am really surprised by the significant performance boost resulting from a simple fuel change.

It is worth remembering that the Piaggio radial engines were derived from a license for the French Gnome et Rhône 14K engine.

While that engine had been among the world's best in the early 1930s, it was largely obsolete by 1940-1941. The Italian manufacturer had, in fact, significantly refined its engines by incorporating improvements G&R introduced for its 14N model (specifically second-generation versions like the 14N-21) - a development of the 14K that was banned for export but clearly "copied" by 14K licensees. These improvements primarily involved reinforcing critical components, vastly increasing cooling surface areas, and designing a new supercharger.

Despite this, the fundamental design of the 14N - and by extension the Piaggio P-XI and P-XII -remained rooted in the 14K, retaining the same major flaws : notably the lack of a central crankshaft bearing and a valve train geometry that failed to ensure uniform fuel-air delivery to the front and rear cylinder banks.

The claimed 15–20% power increase therefore strikes me as highly optimistic. For instance, at G&R, boosting output from the 1,050 hp of the 14N-21 to the 1,280 hp of the 14R required not only 100-octane fuel but also a further increase in cooling fin area - far beyond what is seen on the P-XI - as well as reinforced crankshafts, connecting rods, and pistons, a new axial-intake supercharger, and, crucially, a new crankcase featuring (at long last) a central bearing ! These are all features that appear to be missing from the Italian engine.

As for the P-XII - with its long-stroke cylinders and a crankshaft that still lacked a third main bearing - it is hard to imagine how one could have squeezed an extra 15–20% of performance out of it (an increase of 250 to 300 hp). Its French counterpart, the G&R 18 L, was never truly perfected.

I would be happy to review the original posts regarding the tests of these Piaggio engines—preferably in Italian, a language I know well.
