I was reading though my copy of Building the P-51 Mustang, and it was hinted that NAA did use colored spinners to indicate test or R&D aircraft. These were often red, but it also seems (viewing other photos) that they were also blue, red/white/blue striped, and maybe yellow. I've also seen a couple of images of a test XP-51F with a silver spinner. Was there any truth to this or any method to the madness, also given that the spinner colors seemed to change on the same aircraft frequently?
