This large piece has original RAF Dark Earth/Dark Green paint with the remains of 8 inch wide tail flashes in red , white and blue.
This would suggest a 1939-42 aircraft ( or a later tribute).
The inside is green with pencil writing A/C38 STBD.
There is a part number 9F/892ND A27 and stamp SSMCS over a 4 in a circle.
There is a number 30 in the inside forward edge.
The metal is soft aluminium and there is a weld at the front end and a weld around the horn at the rear.
There are only 3 securing holes on top edge and two on front edge and none on the lower edge.
It is ca. 32 inches long.
The paint has been overpainted at some time as there was a grey.silver and blue layers on top and the fin flash was thinly coated in brown.
It was bent and I have straightened it and tried to shape it the form of a tail fillet...
I hav been through well over 70 allied aircraft starboard tails and I cannot see any that match.
The part numbers also dont match any standard aircraft..
Teh horn sat the rear is very non standard as most aircraft had rudder horns below the tailplanes.
The Chipmunk is one of the few that has this type of horn but it does not match this one.
Given the number of securing points I assume it was for a slow aircraft e.g. liaison/spotter or glider ?
For example the P-40 has 5 each top and botton and 4 at the front.
The inspectors stap SSMCS - I have no idea - possibly a subcontractor or Slingsby Sailplanes ?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thank you
Brian
