What's the story (if there is one) behind the skeleton and the violin? 🤨🤔

Actaully the motif of a skeleton was quite popular among the WW1 and soon after the Great War. IIRC the meaning of the kind of the emblems was not only the fragility of the pilots' life flying the delicate planes but also personified destructive force and was intended to instill fear among enemy troops on the ground. So the "death playing the violin" emblem was an artistic reference to memento mori motifs and symbolized the terror of aerial combat.

The top one belonged to the 13th FS and the bottom one to the 15th FS. Both 22.05 and 503/18 are said to be made by OAW.

Yep .. the Spad belonged to the 19th FS and wore the squadron emblem. Later the unit emblem was re-used by the 112 FS soon before the war started.
