I remember our RAF survival manuals well. In the event of a shark circling your dinghy, the Sea one advised, 'everyone face outwards in a circle and slap the water to drive it away.' On a sea survival exercise off Singapore we had to do that and that encouraged the beast to hurtle TOWARDS us, diving under our single-skinned dinghy. Our Nav, checking the manual again, said "it's OK chaps its not a shark, its a dolphin!" It remained friendly, but we were afraid the barnacled skin could sink us nevertheless.
Nowadays we learn that sharks are ATTRACTED by splashing, as though from a fish in trouble!
