Who They Were and Where They Fought

The French Foreign Legion:
Many Swedes who traveled to Europe at the outbreak of the war enlisted in the legion. Several were deployed to the Dardanelles and participated in the Gallipoli campaign.

The Dominions:
A significant number of Swedish emigrants had settled in the British Empire. Many of these men were subsequently drafted or volunteered to fight for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) and the Australian Imperial Force.

The Canadian Corps: Swedish-born soldiers also fought valiantly for Canada; for instance, individuals like Anthony Otto Grey served in the 48th Canadian Infantry Battalion on the Western Front.

During the 1918 Finnish Civil War, about 1,000 Swedish volunteers formed the Swedish Brigade to fight alongside the anti-communist "White" side against the "Reds".
