Was the Dam Busters raid a success? (2 Viewers)

After watching the "Masters of the Air" series, I don't want a Dambusters movie.

Instead, we need a 617 squadron series, as they did so much more than the dams.

Considering the general level of inaccuracy in war movies, changing the dog's name is completely insignificant. Hollywood would replace Barnes Wallis by a farmboy from West Overshoe, Wyoming and GG by a brash American expat

Also Barnes Wallis would be an ex special forces soldier living incognito but retaining the ability to walk into a group of armed bad guys unarmed and kick punch elbow tickle his way past them all and when he does need a gun he'll take it from said bad guys and somehow the 9mm rounds his pistol fires are magically able to defeat all known levels of body armor, oh and lets not forget if he takes a bullet to the chest a quick burn with a knife blade heated up cherry red heals a sucking chest wound, and somehow the knife's heat treatment is also not effected, and all this happens on a boat, plane, train or building, and the bloke gets back with his wife at the end because now that he is famous and will no doubt get lots of money from interviews she will suddenly want to be with him again, did it miss anything?.

Bomber command like UK forces was multi racially integrated.

He's been wanting to make that movie since 2013!

You could do it a bit around the tragic character of Guy Gibson because he as well as being a fantastic pilot and flyer was a quite aggressive organizer. I believe he was also seeing women outside his marriage so it could be an illustration just of the fantastic strain that people were under.

The 1955 version could hardly be anything other than totally heroic, but perhaps a new version might give a bit more insight into the real horror of having to sacrifice your life to fight a war.

Masters of the Air was a bit of a letdown because again it showed America fighting the entire of World War II on its own with no allies. No, I don't know whether that's a Trump thing that's just suddenly coming to being. All of the post-war movies just seem to show a lot of the cooperation between the the British American and the free forces sides.

And there is the whole separate story of the Dortmund-Ems canal mining in 1940 where Gibson and his colleagues was flying Hampdens dropping converted mines into the canal at low level. In concept á strategic precursor to the later dambuster raid.

I think that it is worse than that.

They only showed the 100th Bomb Group.

Even in the big raids, you didn't really get the scale of the raids.

An example is the Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission.

Reactors that watched the show seemed to think the delay for the Schweinfurt task force negatively impacted the 100th and the Regensburg task force. They didn't get the context of what happened to the other force.

Also, two of the main 4 characters were PoWs for between 1/3 and 1/2 of the show.

Another was back at base for a similar time, as he had been made master navigator.

And then, of course, they totally ignored 8th and 9th AF units in order to shoehorn in a storay bout a unit that had little or nothing to do with the 100th of the 8th AF.

I am sure that Australia's Mel Gibson [ actor ] obtained the production rights way back in 1991-92 , but ran into a lot of " flak " about making a re-make [ I think a lot of Dambuster veterans said - NO - ] . Then Peter Jackson bought the rights somewhere in the 2000's and his replica Lancaster was built by 2010 -- so definitely pre 2013 .

Gibson's career is absolutely stellar and you could make a series on him alone.

170 Missions in Nightfighers, Bombers, Day Fighters and he literally wrote the book! He is complicated but phenomenal.

I heard he was accidently shot down in a Mosquito when he strayed into a stream of RAF Bombers, but the article puts most likely unfamiliarity with the mosquito's fuel tanks meant he ran out of fuel.

There has been a number of books and lots of theories about Guy Gibson's demise . However the latest book I have read seems [ to me ] to come up with the most plausible explanation yet . The book is " The Death Of Guy Gibson " by M. S. Morgan . The Author goes through as much evidence as he can , and makes very interesting reading .
