Were the diagonal and mixed flow paths represented by the HeS 9 and HeS 011 really something the RLM specifically pushed for or were they simply the natural result of Heinkel's own technical development? Looking at von Ohain's personal leanings, the existence of the HeS 30, and Heinkel's broader need for small diameter high performance axial engines, a pure axial flow route actually seems more in line with the company's long term direction. Von Ohain was never a conservative who was rigidly tied to centrifugal designs, and by the HeS 8 stage he was already showing a clear tendency toward reducing diameter and moving in a more axial direction. So if there had been no strong RLM interference, is it possible that after the HeS 8 and HeS 30 Heinkel-Hirth's Class II project might have gone in a direction different from the HeS 011?

von Ohain would have continued to develop the HeS8 and HeS30 were it not for Helmut Shelp, told von Ohain to stop development of the aforementioned and focus on the HeS011 instead.

The story, however, goes further back than 1941.
