Constituted in the Regular Army on 1 March 1935 as the 18th Observation Squadron (Long Range, Light Bombardment), and allotted to the Second Corps Area. Redesignated as the 18th Reconnaissance Squadron on 1 September 1936 and assigned to the 2nd Wing. Concurrently organized at Mitchel Field, NY. Concurrently attached to the 9th Bombardment Group. Redesignated as the 18th Reconnaissance Squadron (Medium Range) on 6 December 1939.
