The updated version of Mirage 2000 contemporaries such as F-16 or Gripen remain very competitive today's

So what advantages would Rafael bring to the table that justify the it's purchase over updated Mirage 2000?

Please, please - Rafale, not Rafael
Seems like the main advantage is the better power-to weight ratio? Also - super-cruise ability with AA missiles. Maneuverability should be also better, with wing of lower sweep, canards, latest FBW.
Ability to carry greater air-to-surface payload. Better t/w ratio should allow it to accelerate better, and to have an easier time to gain the energy, in order both to give it's missiles greater initial speed in short time, as well as to go faster to the deck in order to defeat the enemy missile if it is launched from long range.
Low-observability features can come in the play once the aircraft is 'clean', while M2000 has no such features, at least not as-is.

Isn't the Rafale be more of a stealth aircraft than the Mirage 2000?
Clean, and hopefully without the bomb racks - yes.
Once the drop tanks, bombs, missiles etc. are carried - the RCS goes up badly, and modern radars will detect it easily. Note that really stealth aircraft have enclosed bomb bays in order to stay stealth.

The technology of a 2001 (naval) and 2006 (air force) fighter, compared to a 1982 era fighter.
The Mirage 2000 was what the penny counters of the ministry of defense wanted, vs the taste of the pilots.
The Rafale is much more a pilot's fighter.
By the way, from the pilot viewpoint, two engines are a better insurance than a single one.

Considering that M2000 was powered by just a single engine (and not the bestest and latest engine), it was one very capable combat aircraft. If Dassault made the M2000 around two engines, sorta "delta-winged F-18", the export success would've been far smaller due to the 2-engined fighters being more expensive to buy and operate.

Dassault did just that with its private funded Mirage 4000 developped along the official Mirage 2000 wanted by the deciding power. At that time, the Mirage 4000 represented about exactly what the French Air Force pilots dreamed about (some sort of French F-15) and of course did not get.
And as there were no official order, export success was doomed.

M4000 was not a 'delta-wing F-18', but indeed more likely the 'delta wing F-15'. Such a fighter would've struggled to find the foreign customer, and the French themselves would've been buying far less of them than of the M2000, leaving Dassault in a worse financial position than it was historically the case.
So I'd say that cancelling the M4000 was a good, if not a crucial decision.

  1. The Rafale is still in production so parts availability/sustainment is easier vs the Mirage 2000 given the latter ended production nearly 20yrs ago
  2. The Rafale is better equipped with sensors and avionics and ability to adopt new weapons
  3. Any Mirage 2000 will have lower fatigue life than any Rafale

Rafale + Mirage 2000 mean two fighters with the same purpose, the Rafale being one generation higher, more versatile and presently up to date and adaptable technologicaly speaking.
One more + is it has a naval variant.
